The claim
Take Fiverr and Upwork gigs and let ChatGPT do all the work for you.
Fiverr has published dedicated AI rules for freelancers, and AI disclosure in freelance work was the subject of a 2026 academic study.
How we checked
This is an evidence check, not a hands-on test. We reviewed platform rules and policies, published earnings data, regulator warnings and reporting: 4 sources, listed below.

What the evidence shows
The platforms allow AI help, but passing off raw AI output risks refunds and account bans. Fiverr's guidelines say generic, unmodified AI output doesn't meet its standards, freelancers must honour a client's request for non-AI work, and misrepresenting AI use can lead to cancelled orders and permanent suspension. Upwork's terms let clients restrict AI and treat substantial AI use against such a restriction as fraud. A study of Upwork found writing freelancers' monthly earnings fell 5.2% after ChatGPT's release.
Realistic earnings: Using AI to work faster is permitted, but delivering unedited AI work risks refunds and suspension; the sources suggest demand for basic writing gigs has fallen since ChatGPT launched.
Limitations
Earnings ranges are typical outcomes for a beginner, drawn from the sources; some people do far better or worse. Platform rules change often, so check the latest policy before you start.
