What the evidence shows
Video editing is one of the freelance categories that grew after ChatGPT, but pay pressure and YouTube's own AI editing tools limit the upside. Bloomberry's analysis of Upwork listings found video editing and production jobs up 39% between November 2022 and February 2024, though it also reported hourly rates in video editing falling. Upwork says video editors on its platform typically charge $10 to $60 an hour, with a median of $35. YouTube began rolling out 'Edit with AI' for Shorts in September 2025, including in the UK, which picks highlights, adds transitions and suggests music automatically.
Realistic earnings: There is real demand, but it rewards editing skill; AI speeds up the work rather than replacing the need to learn editing. Simple Shorts edits are the work most exposed to YouTube's free tools.
Limitations
Earnings ranges are typical outcomes for a beginner, drawn from the sources; some people do far better or worse. Platform rules change often, so check the latest policy before you start.
Works for some, not most.
