The claim
Wrap an AI API in a simple app and charge monthly subscriptions..
Constant debate in 2026 about whether 'wrappers are dead', fuelled by model companies shipping competing features.
How we checked
This is an evidence check, not a hands-on test. We reviewed platform rules and policies, published earnings data, regulator warnings and reporting: 3 sources, listed below.
Costs
- Start-up cost
- £20–£150/month (API usage, hosting, domain, payment fees) plus marketing
- Effort
- high
What the evidence shows
A thin layer over GPT or Claude is easy to copy, and the model makers keep adding the same features themselves. Even Google's startups chief warned in 2026 that pure wrappers have no moat. RevenueCat data shows AI apps convert well at first but lose users faster than other apps, and new apps take a tiny share of revenue, so tools serving a specific profession or workflow can work while generic ones churn out.
Realistic earnings: Most launches earn £0–£100/month in year one; a focused niche tool with distribution can reach a few hundred to low thousands.
Limitations
Earnings ranges are typical outcomes for a beginner, drawn from the sources; some people do far better or worse. Platform rules change often, so check the latest policy before you start.
Works for some, not most.
