The claim
Make AI planners, printables and wall art once; sell them forever on Etsy..
Etsy's AI saturation and seller backlash were in the news repeatedly through 2026, while TikTok/YouTube guides keep pushing it.
How we checked
This is an evidence check, not a hands-on test. We reviewed platform rules and policies, published earnings data, regulator warnings and reporting: 4 sources, listed below.
Costs
- Start-up cost
- £0–£20/month (Etsy listing fees of $0.20 each plus AI/Canva tools)
- Effort
- medium
What the evidence shows
Digital downloads cost nothing to copy, so AI made it easy to flood Etsy with planners and wall art, and the category is now badly oversaturated. Etsy requires AI disclosure, bans selling prompts and resold templates, and has removed thousands of listings, while established sellers report big sales drops as buyers lose trust. Shops with original, specialised products and their own traffic can still do well, but the 'passive income' pitch rarely holds.
Realistic earnings: Typically a handful of sales, £0–£100 total in the first year; consistent £100+/month needs a narrow niche and outside traffic like Pinterest.
Limitations
Earnings ranges are typical outcomes for a beginner, drawn from the sources; some people do far better or worse. Platform rules change often, so check the latest policy before you start.
Rarely matches what is promised.
