What the evidence shows

Prompt engineering as a stand-alone, six-figure job title has largely faded, according to reporting citing Indeed and The Wall Street Journal. Indeed data reported by Computerwoche shows searches for the role rose from about 2 per million before ChatGPT to 144 per million in April 2023, then fell to about 20 to 30 per million by early 2025, and an Indeed executive described prompt engineer job postings as minimal. An Indeed economist told Fortune that prompting is a good skill to have but 'not an entire title'. Microsoft research cited by the WSJ points to employers adding roles such as AI trainer, AI data specialist and AI security specialist instead.

Realistic earnings: The sources show prompting is valued as a skill inside other jobs rather than as a role most people can be hired into on its own. None of them show beginners landing six-figure prompt engineer jobs today.

Limitations

Earnings ranges are typical outcomes for a beginner, drawn from the sources; some people do far better or worse. Platform rules change often, so check the latest policy before you start.
