The idea
Use your existing professional skills to take on AI-related freelance projects.
Who the evidence applies to: Freelancers with established specialist skills who can take on complex, AI-augmented projects rather than simple AI-generated output
Upwork published its Future Workforce Index 2026 in July 2026, reporting higher earnings for complex AI work and lower earnings for simpler AI tasks.
How we checked
This is an evidence check: we looked for large studies, official statistics and published datasets, opened every source, and had a second researcher check each figure against them. 6 sources, listed below.

What the evidence shows
Upwork's Future Workforce Index 2026 found US freelancers doing AI work earn 34% more per hour than those not using AI, and that earnings for complex AI-augmented work rose while lower-complexity AI execution work saw earnings fall 28% year on year. A study in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization found demand for machine learning programming on a freelancing platform grew 24% and AI chatbot development nearly tripled after ChatGPT, while demand for substitutable skills such as writing and translation fell by 20–50% relative to the expected trend. Research by Hui, Reshef and Zhou on Upwork found writing freelancers' monthly earnings fell 5.2% after ChatGPT, and a Management Science study found a 21% drop in writing and coding job posts. The gains go to specialised, complex work; basic AI-assisted output is getting cheaper.
What to expect: If you already have in-demand expertise and apply AI to complex projects, the platform data points to higher pay. If your work is easily substituted by AI, such as routine writing or image creation, research shows fewer jobs and lower earnings, and the Upwork figures cover the US only.
First steps
- Check whether your service is one the research found AI substitutes (such as basic writing or translation) or complements (such as specialist technical or professional work)
- Add AI to the complex parts of your existing service rather than selling simple AI output, since lower-complexity AI work saw falling earnings in Upwork's data
- Look at which categories are growing on the platform you use before repositioning your profile
- Track your own hourly earnings before and after changing your service so you can see whether it is paying off
Limitations
Studies report averages: your own result depends on your field, skills and where you live. Figures come from the sources below and may be updated as new evidence appears.
